Biography

Karen McCalla is the teacher librarian and technology integrationist at Mill River, a 7th-12th grade school in North Clarendon, Vermont. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education and history from Castleton University in 1996 and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Michigan in 2001. McCalla is also the executive director and chief maker evangelist at The MINT, a community makerspace in Rutland, Vermont and coaches and mentors FIRST robotics teams at the FIRST Lego League and FIRST Robotics Competition levels. She has been named the Vermont Tech Jam Tech Champion and the Rutland Economic Development Innovator of the Year in 2019 and was awarded the International Society for Technology Education’s Making IT Happen award in 2017. McCalla looks forward to spreading excitement about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education across Vermont and increasing equitable access to cutting-edge STEAM programming in all schools, for all students.
