Biography

Jason Torres-Rangel has proudly taught high school English for 19 years. He is the son of two math and computer science teachers who inspired him growing up with their own dedication to creating science, technology, engineering and math opportunities for students in East Los Angeles. Torres-Rangel continues in these footsteps, teaching English at the historic Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, which participated in the historic 1968 student walkouts to protest the treatment of Mexican American students.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Pomona College, a master’s degree in education from Harvard University, a master’s in English from California State University Los Angeles and is working on a doctorate in education from Claremont Graduate University. In 2015, he won the United Way Inspirational Teacher award, nominated by a student and her mother. In 2016, he was recognized by the White House for the Initiative Advancing Educational Equity for Hispanics. In 2020, he was recognized by the American Federation of Teachers for his work in the Community Schools Movement. In 2022, he was nominated by another student and her mother and won Los Angeles Unified Teacher of the Year and California Teacher of the Year.

Torres-Rangel is a fierce equity warrior, an advocate for students, parents, teachers, counselors and education personnel. He recognizes that the work of education is deeply personal, and his work is rooted in profound love, respect and justice.
