Biography

Ashley Lockwood has impacted the lives of students, families and colleagues as a dedicated educator, mentor and advocate. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Delaware and a Master of Education from Wilmington University. Her own educational background allows her to combine her passion for understanding societal relationships with her purpose, which is teaching children.

She began her career teaching special education in 2013. In 2016, she began teaching at Lulu Ross Elementary School in Milford, Delaware. Since then, she has taught fourth- and fifth-grade inclusion classes. She currently teaches in the fifth-grade Spanish immersion program. Lockwood believes that teachers should serve as students’ strongest advocates and so serves on committees that allow teachers to be a voice for all students. In 2020, she started the Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee (EMAC) for the Milford Education Association, a committee dedicated to advocating for students and staff of color. As the EMAC chair, she collaborates with members to propose solutions to issues of inequity.

She is a member of Delaware State Education Association’s EMAC and Milford School District’s Equity Action Committee. In addition to her educational roles, she is a member of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League Young Professionals and served as the Kent County Committee chair, where she developed programs and community service for underserved communities. She is also a mentor in her district’s new teacher mentoring program and a member of her school’s Positive Behavior Supports committee.
