Biography

Beth Barkley teaches 9th and 10th grade English to newcomers in the International Academy at Cardozo Education Campus. She has taught a human rights and social action course and co-facilitated intergroup dialogues and social identity workshops with students. Barkley works with students to organize for justice, including a recent campaign for access to mental health services and resources for immigrant students and families. Barkley and her students also organized the Inspiring Voices: Challenges and Resilience from Young Leaders in the Immigrant Community series.  

In the community, Barkley is a part of United We Dream and Teaching for Change’s D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice People’s History Curriculum working group. Prior to teaching at Cardozo, Barkley taught in El Salvador and Maryland. Barkley holds a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature, along with a minor in Spanish language and culture from the University of Maryland, where she also earned her Master of Education in curriculum and instruction.  

Barkley was recognized as a 2020 D.C. Teacher of the Year finalist and as a recipient of the system’s Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Teaching. Barkley cares deeply about her family and her students and their families, always leading with a driving force of unconditional love.
