On the surface, developing a TED-style talk looks like ideation and drafting, revising and practicing until it is ready to be shared on a stage. Those are the parts we can point to, the parts we can see. What isn’t as visible but is just as crucial is the internal work of finding your talk. It’s less like painting and more like sculpting. It means asking big questions, looking underneath the apparent and sitting with the uncertain.
Each State Teacher of the Year is invited to craft their own TED-style talk as part of their experience during their year of service. In May, the National Teacher of the Year Program was pleased to invite five 2023 State Teachers of the Year to share their talks before the 2024 State Teacher of the Year cohort.
The 2023 Utah Teacher of the Year Chad Warnick, 2023 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Dani B. Charbonneau, 2023 South Carolina Teacher of the Year Deion Jamison, 2023 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Carolyn Kielma and 2023 Kansas Teacher of the Year Brian Skinner delivered their talks as part of the annual National Teacher of the Year Program Washington Week. The event was emceed by Jonathan Juravich, 2018 Ohio Teacher of the Year and a 2018 National Teacher of the Year finalist.
The National Teacher of the Year Program captured these talks at our Teacher Talk Showcase event, sponsored by Google for Education, and is now proud to share these talks.
