The 2025 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Ashlie Crosson says she tries to fill her classroom with as much student expression as she can. Crosson teaches Advanced Placement language and composition, journalism, English 10 and Survival Stories. One of her favorite parts of her classroom is the one-word board, where each student selects a single word that will motivate and inspire them throughout the school year. You can get a glimpse of the one-word board in this video.
Crosson says her classroom is also a place that celebrates student work, authors’ insights and faraway places — a place to read, write and dream and an open port for student ideas and safe harbor for their identities.
Crosson’s approach to teaching is grounded in reflection and resilience, values she carries through her favorite quote by Louisa May Alcott: “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”
Some of the most meaningful lessons Crosson has learned have come from her students — including Mina, who once reminded her of the quiet but profound power of self-assurance: “Sometimes the most important thing we can teach our students is how to believe in themselves.” That lesson continues to serve as the foundation of how Crosson builds confidence and connection in her classroom every day.
