5-7
Becky Haenfler has dreamed of being a teacher since she was young, captivated by the way books and stories come to life. Now, in her 20th year of teaching, she fulfills that dream as the middle school English language arts teacher at Avon Public Schools in Avon, South Dakota, in the very classroom that first sparked her passion.
Haenfler earned her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from the University of South Dakota and holds endorsements and certifications at the middle and secondary levels. Most recently, Haenfler completed her Master of Arts as a reading specialist from the University of South Dakota, further enhancing her expertise in literary instruction.
Haenfler believes that building strong relationships, both inside and outside the classroom, is the foundation of effective teaching. She encourages positive student engagement to maximize each student’s learning experience. With a hands-on approach, Haenfler brings reading to life through diverse instructional methods, helping to make learning meaningful. Her teaching also emphasizes the values of empathy, respect and responsibility, helping students develop as thoughtful and responsible individuals.
Haenfler takes pride in her leadership roles, working to improve both her school and community. She collaborates with colleagues to enhance student learning and school culture and leads several youth organizations in the Avon community, strengthening the connection between school and community.
In the same small classroom that once inspired her to teach, Haenfler is now inspiring her students to pursue their dreams by encouraging them to work hard and believe in their potential.
