English as a Second Language
7
Gillian Ober teaches seventh grade English as a second language at Freehold Intermediate School in Freehold Borough, New Jersey. Specializing in supporting newcomers (students new to the U.S.) and those with interrupted education, she designs a hands-on, language-rich curriculum that builds English proficiency and critical thinking skills.
Ober earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic language and literature and English language and literature from Boston University, graduating magna cum laude. She holds a Master of Arts in teaching from Monmouth University, where she received the Excellence in English as a Second Language Award and the Dean's Award for Scholarship, and a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University, where she was honored with the Award of Excellence for her capstone project.
Her teaching career has taken her across the world, from serving as a language and culture assistant in Murcia, Spain, to teaching English through the Princeton in Asia fellowship in rural Thailand. These experiences deepened her belief in the transformative power of multilingualism and global education.
Ober also teaches as an adjunct professor at Georgian Court and Monmouth universities, where she prepares educators to work with diverse learners. She has presented at various conferences in both New Jersey and Washington state on topics such as the intersection of special education and multilingualism, as well as artificial intelligence.
Ober strives to create classrooms where every language and story is valued as a source of strength and connection.
