Biography:

Leon Smith teaches Advanced Placement United States history and Advanced Placement African American studies at Haverford High School in Havertown, Pennsylvania. He brings more than two decades of experience as an educator, leader, mentor and policy advocate dedicated to empowering both students and teachers.

Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in secondary social studies education from the University of Maryland at College Park, a Master of Education in instructional systems from Pennsylvania State University and a PK–12 principal certification from Cabrini University.

Cabrini University’s Center for Urban Education recognized Smith with the High-Impact Moral and Courageous Teacher Award in 2024, and in 2020 he was honored as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. He was also profiled on NBC’s Today show for his commitment to recruiting and supporting future educators.

Smith’s teaching is rooted in the conviction that education has the power to transform lives and inspire students to achieve their highest potential. His classroom emphasizes critical thinking, civic engagement and the inclusion of multiple perspectives in history.

Beyond the classroom, Smith serves on the board of the Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium and is a member of the Teach Plus National Teacher Policy Cabinet. He also works as a College Board Advanced Placement workshop consultant for the African American studies course and has coached freshman basketball for more than 20 years.
