Biography:

With more than 20 years of teaching experience, Matthew “Matt” Neale has spent the past 14 years at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke County Public Schools, where he currently teaches Advanced English 10 and Journalism I–IV. Throughout his career, he has also taught English 9 and 10 Advanced, English 10, 11 and 12 and Theater I–IV.

Neale revitalized Hidden Valley’s journalism program, mentoring students in writing, reporting and storytelling. His commitment to elevating student voice has empowered countless young people to express themselves with confidence and creativity. Widely respected by students and colleagues alike, he leads with his ASK philosophy — approachable, standards and kindness — a guiding principle that has earned him a reputation as a trusted mentor and compassionate educator.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, theatre and speech education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Juris Doctor from University of Kentucky College of Law. His legal training deepened his understanding of rhetoric, argument and ethical communication.

Beyond the classroom, Neale is a passionate advocate for community wellbeing. He leads Hidden Valley’s opioid awareness initiative in partnership with the Prevention Council of Roanoke County, and his cross-curricular lesson plan was recognized by the Virginia Office for Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force.

Neale is committed to classroom cultures that prioritize student agency, critical thinking and authentic expression.
