With more than 20 years as a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) educational leader, Matthew Winheim has made a lasting impact on his community and the field of education. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, his passion for mathematics emerged during his time at Edwards Air Force Base. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies with a minor in mathematics from California State University, Bakersfield, Winheim obtained his teaching credential and began guiding countless students toward successful career pathways.
He holds a master’s degree in mathematics education from Western Governors University and has been instrumental in developing STEM/STEAM programs across traditional and charter schools in the Aerospace Valley. One of his notable achievements was leading the creation of a high school math course in collaboration with a community college, which reduced the need for remediation and prepared students for STEM careers.
Winheim has held key leadership roles, including founding administrator and deputy headmaster of the Palmdale Aerospace Academy. He was honored as a “Hometown Hero” at the 2022 Edwards Open House and STEM Expo, where he flew with the Air Force Thunderbirds. He was recently named Teacher of the Year for the state of California.
Currently, he teaches STEM aviation and mathematics at the Space and Aeronautics Gateway to Exploration (SAGE) Magnet Academy, integrating aeronautics with STEM to inspire the next generation of innovators and aviators. He also serves as president of a 501(c)3 nonprofit called the Edwards Air Force Base Civilian-Military Support Group, supporting active–duty military personnel and their families in his community.
