Biography:

Melissa Evon currently teaches ninth through 12th grade students in family and consumer sciences at Elgin High School in Elgin, Oklahoma. She also serves as the adviser for her school’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter. Evon earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a Master of Science in education from Walden University and, most recently, completed a graduate certificate in education leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Evon’s career has spanned multiple states, providing her the opportunity to teach in Virginia and Colorado during her husband’s service in the U.S. Air Force. Following his retirement, she returned to Oklahoma and resumed her teaching career there. Driven by her strong belief in practical education, she took a leap of faith two years ago, trading social sciences for family and consumer sciences. The move has empowered her to put her philosophy into practice, focusing on skills such as interpersonal communication, financial literacy, career preparation and real-life “adulting” skills.

Recognized for both her innovative instructional practices and her dedication to integrating community service into her curriculum, she was also named the 2020 Oklahoma Middle Level Education Association Educator of the Year and the 2017 Oklahoma VFW National Citizenship Education Middle School Teacher.

Evon is proud that her students see her classroom as an inclusive space where all are valued. She is driven to offer relevant learning experiences that will serve students during their time in school and beyond graduation.
