Music: Choir
9‑12
Yoo Kyung “Yooky” Shin is a music teacher and the choral director at Simon Sanchez High School (SSHS) in Yigo, Guam. She has been teaching for 18 years and currently teaches grades 9–12 beginning and mixed choirs. Shin received her Bachelor of Arts in education from the University of Guam and her Master of Music in music education from Boston University.
Shin established her choral program in the school in 2013 and started a select chorus, La Voce – The Voice of SSHS. La Voce has received many awards and accolades in various music festivals, such as the Best in Show award in the Guam Chamber of Commerce’s Song Festival and gold awards throughout many years in the Tumon Bay Music Festival (TBMF), the largest music festival in Micronesia. The chorus was also chosen by the TBMF judges to do the command performance in 2019 and 2024.
Shin strives to nurture students as individuals and musicians through student-driven projects. Shin guides students to accept, appreciate and celebrate the various cultures of Guam through a project in which students teach each other to sing a song from their culture, in their language. She also challenges her students to become musically literate and arrange and compose meaningful songs about their lives.
Shin loves making music with her students and seeing them grow and thrive, not only as musicians but also as persons.
